"The planning of tourism on rural areas: the stakeholders` perceptions of the Boticas municipality (Northeastern Portugal)"

Abstract
Most of the strategies developed to “save” rural territories in Europe have not been successful. One of the main problems has been the adoption of the top-down paradigm in the approach to the development of those territories. Portugal is a good example of the difficulty of adopting a bottom-up paradigm. The main objective of this paper is to present the perceptions of the local (including the residents) and regional stakeholders acting at Boticas towards the set of resources available and the development of the tourism industry. Boticas is a Northeastern Portuguese rural low density municipality. Capturing those perceptions, the research aims contributing to the establishment of a more integrated and innovative development strategy and, this way, a more able one in what concerns profiting from the potential associated to the growing of the tourism industry experienced lately by Portugal. The adoption of a mixed-method to proceed to the evaluation of the resources and capturing the perceptions on their tourist potential kept by the different stakeholders is suggested. Empirical data was collected through a survey applied to 373 of its residents and 25 interviews conducted to local and regional actors, supported by an inventory performed of the cultural resources and its capacity of being visited. We could conclude that residents tend to have a very positive perception towards tourism development and that their perceptions largely met the ones of other stakeholders.

"Discussing the posthosting evaluation of a mega sporting event: The perception of Warsaw Residents toward UEFA EURO 2012”

•  “Discussing the posthosting evaluation of a mega sporting event: The perception of Warsaw Residents toward UEFA EURO 2012”, Tourism and HospitalityResearch, Vol. 17, Nº 4, 2017, pp. 392–410 [Publicado online em 1 de agosto de 2016, DOI: 10.1177/1467358416642009] (Justyna Garbacz, J. Cadima Ribeiro e Paulo Reis Mourão).

The aim of this paper is to identify Warsaw residents’ perceptions and attitudes toward the UEFA EURO 2012 tournament. The investigation focused on how residents of Warsaw perceived the impacts of the tournament one year after the event. A questionnaire survey was applied using a stratified sampling method to 480 residents of Warsaw. The results of the survey and ordered logit regressions show that although the residents did not perceive that the economic benefits of the tournament were spread uniformly, a large majority valued the tournament’s role in promoting Warsaw as a tourist destination and enhancing the international identity of the city. Whereas residents generally displayed positive attitudes toward EURO 2012 in terms of lifting their pride and bringing the community closer together, they also noted some negative impacts of the event. The opinions expressed about the tournament depended on the age, education, and income of the responders. A majority of the residents agreed that the positive impacts of EURO 2012 outweighed the negative.

"The European Capitals of Culture and their capacity to change the socioeconomic profile of the hosting cities – the cases of Guimarães and Košice"

Trabalho em progresso:

«Abstract

European Capitals of Culture (ECOC) are still nowadays the most ambitious cultural collaborative project most performed in Europe. During 15 years (from 1985, the date of its creation, until 2000) several capitals and main cities in each of the European countries hosted it. After, less known and less large cities had also the opportunity of hosting it. After 32 years of the first designation of a European Capital of Culture, what can we tell about the regeneration and impacts of its hosting by medium sized cities like Guimarães (ECOC in 2012) and Košice (ECOC in 2013)? What has been the capacity of the ECOC to change the socioeconomic profile of those cities? What was its capacity of rebranding the cities and enhancing their tourism industry? And what about the change verified in the cultural programme supplied? These are the main questions to which we will try answer in the present paper. For that, it was made use of primary and secondary sources referred to the two cities mentioned, such as the Urban Audit statistics and semi-structured interviews conducted to local and regional stakeholders. The main results attained tell us that ...
