"Discussing the posthosting evaluation of a mega sporting event: The perception of Warsaw Residents toward UEFA EURO 2012"

«Abstract
The aim of this paper is to identify Warsaw residents’ perceptions and attitudes toward the UEFA EURO 2012 tournament. The investigation focused on how residents of Warsaw perceived the impacts of the tournament one year after the event. A questionnaire survey was applied using a stratified sampling method to 480 residents of Warsaw. The results of the survey and ordered logit regressions show that although the residents did not perceive that the economic benefits of the tournament were spread uniformly, a large majority valued the tournament’s role in promoting Warsaw as a tourist destination and enhancing the international identity of the city. Whereas residents generally displayed positive attitudes toward EURO 2012 in terms of lifting their pride and bringing the community closer together, they also noted some negative impacts of the event. The opinions expressed about the tournament depended on the age, education, and income of the responders. A majority of the residents agreed that the positive impacts of EURO 2012 outweighed the negative.»

"Cultural mega-events and the enhancement of a city's image: differences between engaged participants and attendees"

"A city's image can serve as the basis upon which to develop a strong sense of community. This, in turn, fosters trust and cooperation which may attract tourists and investment, and drive regional economic growth. One strategy to enhance a city's image is to host cultural mega-events. This study focuses on Guimarães, one of the European Capitals of Culture of 2012, and adopts a marketing communication perspective to explore issues of city image. The objective of the study reported was to understand whether images of Guimarães improved after it hosted the cultural mega-event. To attain this goal, we compare the perceptions of residents who participated in the event (engaged participants) and attendees. Several significant findings are reported and their implications for event managers and public policy administrators are presented, along with the limitations of the study."

"TOURISTS’ MOTIVATION TOWARD VISITING A WORLD HERITAGE SITE: THE CASE OF GUIMARÃES"

"Within the major role that the tourism industry is taking in sustaining and enhancing growth in economies all around the world, the cultural segment deserves a particular look as in most cases, it is playing a leading role. This has to do with the idea of tourists’ visits as a memorable happening and an authentic experience and relates to the psychological dimension of tourist demand. This study investigated the motivation behind the choice of a cultural/heritage destination, and particularly a World Heritage Site (WHS). Taking the case of Guimarães, the study inquired on the tourists’ motivations and perceived attributes of the city to conclude on the level of satisfaction tourists get from their visits and the destination attributes. The methodology used in this research was of a quantitative nature, based on a self-administered survey applied to 325 tourists who visited Guimarães during 2015. In that analytical approach, tourists were organized according to their main visit motivation, i.e., if they were mainly motivated by visiting a World Heritage Site or by other reasons. An interesting result was that despite WHS visitors reporting higher satisfaction levels, the other type of visitors want to return in greater numbers. The study concluded that the destination is performing well but is suffering from not having a consolidated image in the market. Looking at these and other results obtained, several recommendations were made to increase tourists’ satisfaction vis-à-vis the destination by mainly addressing the strategy to be used in advertising the set of products and services it can provide to visitors."

“Portuguese Publication in the Aim of Regional Science: a Study of the Articles Published in RPER from 2003 to 2015”

"This paper is a study of the full content of the articles published by RPER, the Portuguese Review of Regional Studies, since its launching, in 2003, until the first quarter of 2015. RPER is the journal edited by the Portuguese section of European Regional Science Association, which was established in the first half of the eighties of the 20th century. The Association (APDR) and the Journal are the result of the contribution of researchers and technicians from different scientific fields, going from Economics to Geography, Sociology, Engineering and Architecture, mainly, who take as their main focus the territory, that is, the socio-economic life as it involves in concrete sites, conditioned by their resources and capabilities, historical and cultural heritage and institutions. Content analysis was undertaken in order to identify the main subjects chosen along the total period under analysis, the nature of the articles published (more theoretical or empirical) and the main analytical framework used. The analysis takes also sub-periods in order to investigate major trends found in terms of subjects chosen and analytical methods, questioning the rationale behind that. The paper concludes with a few notes regarding the social echo that the research got and with the identification of the main limitations of the research performed. In a first part of the article, to serve as a basis for the empirical approach developed, a summary review of the genesis and evolution of Regional Science at international level is undertaken."

"Destination attributes and tourist`s satisfaction in a cultural destination"

«Cultural tourism is one of the leading growing segments of the tourism industry. Many tourists who visit heritage sites seek a value-added and authentic experience, when compared with the traditional products or mass destinations. Considering the importance of tourist`s satisfaction in what regards the revisit intentions and word-of-mouth referrals, which in turn influence the economic development of the tourist destination, this study attempts to investigate the relationship between cultural/heritage destination attributes and tourist`s satisfaction. The study area for this paper is the city of Guimarães, in the northwest of Portugal. This city is a place of strong symbolic and cultural significance and was deemed a world heritage site (UNESCO) in the year 2001. In 2012, Guimarães was one of the cities that hosted the European Capital of Culture (ECOC). All this enhanced its tourism potential and increased the amounts of visitors. The methodology consists of quantitative research based on a self-administered survey applied to tourists who visited Guimarães in the first half of 2015. Based upon the empirical results of this study, several recommendations can be made to increase tourists’ satisfaction vis-à-vis to Guimarães, regarding tourists’ needs, attributes valorization and cultural/heritage sustainability.»
