“Awakening the senses: sensescapes’ mapping and smart surveys on the Saint James’ Way”

https://doi.org/10.2478/mgrsd-2025-0043

Abstract

This paper analyses the role of sensescapes in tourism planning, focusing on smart surveys and GIS mapping and analysis for pilgrimage tourism. A mixed methods approach and primary and secondary sources were used. A methodology was developed to collect and analyse territorial sensorial characteristics across the five main senses by using three main characteristics. A smart survey and GIS desktop and online tools were used to create a heat map. This is one of the first studies using a methodology based on smart surveys to collect sensory data, then using GIS to map and analyse it. By utilizing GIS for data collection and combining all sensory data, this study aims to bridge a gap in the previous research. This paper enhances tourism theory and practice by outlining the current and prospective use of emerging technologies, including smart surveys and GIS heat maps, in the tourism industry.

Keywords

Senses and tourist experiences • sensescape mapping • pilgrimage tourism • Portuguese Way of Saint James • heat map • smart survey

Guião| Perguntas

1.    Quem é o cidadão Professor José António Cadima Ribeiro?

Resposta:

i)                As principais perceções que foram identificadas referem-se aos impactes negativos potenciais do turismo no ambiente e na dinâmica sociocultural da comunidade local, e, por outro lado, a efeitos benéficos na geração de rendimento e no estímulo de algumas manifestações de cultura locais;

ii)             Por outro lado, identificou-se a existência de três grupos de residentes consoante as perceções que mantinham sobre os efeitos do turismo, o que, obviamente, conduz a diferentes níveis de apoio ao projeto de desenvolvimento do turismo do parque;

iii)           O primeiro grupo, que denominámos “Guardiões da Tradição e da Ética”, é notável pelas fortes preocupações expressas sobre os impactes sociais negativos do turismo, particularmente no que respeita a potenciais mudanças culturais e éticas na comunidade;

iv)            O segundo grupo, denominado “Apoiantes Conscientes dos Impactes”, compreende residentes que estão conscientes dos potenciais impactes negativos em várias dimensões e, por contrapartida, dos efeitos positivos esperados no emprego, e que, portanto, apoiam o desenvolvimento do turismo;

“Residents’ perceptions of tourism development in the context of a new governance framework for Portuguese protected areas: The case of a small peripheral natural park”, Journal of Rural Studies, Vol. 112, dezembro de 2024, pp. 103451,

Abstract

Historically, Portuguese protected areas (PAs) have been operating under top-down governance, often neglecting local communities. In 2019, the Portuguese government established a new governance model for PAs, based on co-management. The new co-management approach emphasises collaborative and participatory governance and positions sustainable tourism as a catalyst for territorial revitalisation and local development. However, local communities' attitudes and perceptions regarding tourism in these areas remain largely uncharted. This study focuses on the Alvão Natural Park (PNAL), a small rural and mountainous Portuguese PA, which is currently in the early stages of co-management implementation. Our goal was to investigate local residents' perceptions of tourism's impacts and identify potential divergence among resident groups and their level of support for tourism development. These insights are crucial because the active engagement of local communities is a key element for sustainable tourism development and the successful implementation of co-management. The study employed a self-administered survey, garnering responses from 250 PNAL residents representing over half of the park's population. Factor analysis identified four primary perceptual dimensions and cluster analysis classified residents into three distinct groups based on their tourism perceptions. While most PNAL residents express support for tourism development, there is a resounding call for new policies to revert the legacy of top-down governance. This research provides essential insights for shaping effective tourism policies, planning and development strategies, and ensuring the active involvement of local communities in co-management and sustainable development efforts within the PNAL. Moreover, this study demonstrates the applicability of this research approach in the context of evolving governance models with the potential for adaptation to other PAs across Portugal and other countries undergoing similar governance transitions.

Sustainable Development of Territories in Contexts of Uncertainty: External Shocks and Risks

Abstract

 The pursuit of development has increasingly prioritized sustainability. Sustainable approaches to development and adopting people’s well-being as a main goal have substantial implications for the competitiveness of territories. When viewed through a nature lens, sustainability maintains a close connection with circular economy. If sustainability is the paradigm the world needs to commit to, businesses, policy makers and people have to deal with the difficulties and uncertainties arising from those requirements and other severe phenomena, like international armed conflicts and pandemic crises. By using case studies, this book addresses territorial bottlenecks and grapples with social and developmental challenges. The book intends to function as a practical guide for policymakers and practitioners, providing them with the knowledge necessary to adopt and implement sustainable development strategies. It advocates the implementation of socially inclusive policies and the adoption of innovative governance models able to safeguard democratic principles while enhancing the efficacy of decision-making processes.

Towards Sustainable Tourism Development in a Small Protected Area: Mapping Stakeholders' Perceptions in the Alvão Natural Park, Portugal

ABSTRACT

The Alvão Natural Park (PNAL) is the smallest natural park in Portugal. The PNAL is currently in the process of implementing its co-management model, abandoning the old centralized top-down model, and aiming for a more sustainable development of the protected area. Recognizing the key role of stakeholders in sustainable tourism development in protected areas, this study examines how PNAL stakeholders perceive various topics related to sustainable tourism and local development. To this end, 19 PNAL stakeholders participated in two focus groups that were conducted to collect the primary data. NVivo software was used for content analysis and mapping stakeholders’ perceptions. The results indicate that even though the stakeholders believe that the protected area has great tourism potential and that the park’s residents are open to tourism, public authority conflicts and the lack of infrastructure and services to support tourism present obstacles to a sustainable tourism development.

"The Portuguese St. James Way: pilgrims` profile, motivations and assessment of the route"

Abstract

There is a relevant number of studies about the St. James Way, but lesser attention has been paid to the pilgrims` perceptions towards the Way and motivations to perform it, especially from those who take the Portuguese Way. Motivations to do it can be related to landscape, the spiritual dimension, seeking well-being and self-therapy, or getting answers to several issues of daily life. This research was carried out aiming to identify the motivations, profile and satisfaction of pilgrims towards the Portuguese St. James Way. Related to the satisfaction provided, the lack of the supply of services or goods along the Way was also analysed. For getting data, a questionnaire was applied to 351 pilgrims, complemented by participant observation. The results attained tell us that pilgrims were mostly motivated by spiritual and cultural reasons. Regarding the pilgrims` profile, we could conclude that most of them are within the 25 and 64 age group, have high levels of education and a formal job and are making the Way on foot. Besides nationality, the time needed to travel to start the Caminho and the organization of the trip, little differentiates one pilgrim from another. 57.3% of them have shown to be very satisfied with the Portuguese Way to Santiago (Central route), following their initial expectations on it. Based on the assessment produced by the pilgrims and the researchers, a few policy recommendations to local authorities envisaging to maximize the pilgrims’ well-being are enounced.

Tourism Stakeholders’ Perceptions Towards Sustainable Tourism Development in a Low-Density Area: The Case of the Alvão Natural Park (Portugal)

With a total area of 7239 hectares, the Alvão Natural Park (PNAL) is the smallest natural park in Portugal. Like the scenario experienced in many rural territories and protected areas of the country, the PNAL possesses great biodiversity and natural value while confronted by a gradual loss and aging of its resident population, scarce business fabric and lack of coordination between local agents. Thus, the commitment on the promotion of a sustainable and resilient tourism strategy emerges as one of the main paths to enhance development of this protected area, aiming achieving new economic, social and environmental dynamics. In this context, this study proposes to analyze the perceptions of the PNAL stakeholders on several issues related to sustainable tourism and local development. Adopting a qualitative methodological design, primary data were collected by conducting two focus groups, which were attended by a total of 19 local agents of the PNAL. Stakeholders were invited to discuss four broad themes of the Park's tourism context: i) the tourism potential; ii) the diagnosis of the current tourism sector; iii) residents' attitudes towards potential visitors; and iv) the main risks and challenges ahead. The analysis of the qualitative data collected from the focus groups allowed us to determine that: 1) stakeholders believe that the territory has a high tourism potential; 2) PNAL is faced with the lack of infrastructure and services to support tourism; 3) local populations will be receptive to the presence and increase in the number of visitors; and 4) there is concerns regarding several risks, such as the continued loss of population, climate change and forest fires, and the risks associated with mass tourism. The results obtained can be useful for the design of tourism development strategies for this territory, namely in what regards the coordination of actions between stakeholders, which is particularly relevant in the current framework of implementation of the PNAL's co-management model.

"The relationship between creative tourism and local development: a bibliometric approach for the period 2009-2019"

Abstract

The aim of this investigation is to identify the relationship which can be found in the literature between creative tourism and local development, using a bibliometric inventory made in scientific databases (Academia.edu, Econlit, Google Scholar, CAPES Journals, Redalyc, Scielo.org, SCOPUS, and Web of Science, among others) as research method. In general, it was possible to verify that there is a concern of the authors of the papers analysed in establishing a link between creative tourism and local/regional development, without, however, going very far on this relationship, or, at least, when it came to identifying the impacts of economic, cultural, social and environmental nature. This being said, it seems to be relevant that future research takes a deeper look at the hypothesized relationship between the proposals of creative tourism and the benefits it can bring to local communities.

Residents’ perceptions of the tourism impacts on a mature destination: the case of Madeira Island

Residents have a fundamental role in the quality of tourists’ experiences and satisfaction gotten from a visit and, thus, in the success of a tourism destination. This paper addresses the perceptions that residents have of the impacts of tourism on Madeira Island, a mature tourism destination. Based on data extracted from a survey applied to residents during August and September 2018, we have inquired on the extent to which they keep a positive perception of the impacts of the tourist industry. The survey tried to address the residents’ perceptions on, either, economic, cultural, social or environmental impacts. In the analysis of data, both descriptive and multivariable statistical methods were used. The empirical results attained indicate that the residents feel that there is no excess of tourism on the Island, which means that they agree that tourism is beneficial. They do not fail to realize that there are a few negative consequences, but the positive ones, in average, got better scores. Being an inhabitant of an urban or a rural site did not show to influence differently the perceptions kept on the contribution of tourism to the overall development of Madeira Island. This type of analysis can be a useful tool for tourism planners and managers in order to prevent or minimize eventual negative impacts of the tourism industry, as felt by the local inhabitants, and, thus, for designing the required policies.
