Special session on the governance of rural areas and agrofood systems (48th Congress of the ERSA, Liverpool 27-31 August 2008)

«Announcement :

After Paris2007, André Torre and Jean-Baptiste Traversac are organising a special session focusing on the governance of rural areas and agrofood systems.

The renewal of the rural territories recombines their social structure. Inside these sphere bilateral agreements, agricultural markets, organizations, firms and all others significant institutions are affected and redesigned by the economic changes induced by external and internal pressures. On one side, the food systems are under constant changes on their periphery (i.e. in their relation with the other rural spheres) but also in their core activities. Labor profiles, technical changes, forward and backward partnerships are in permanent evolution involving new organizational paradigms. On the other side, the industrial, residential and transport infrastructures are generating lots of positive and negative externalities on agriculture and environment. Contributors will present theoretical and empirical findings on the new trends of the rural and regional agricultural developments.

Your communications on the following emphases are particularly welcome:

(1) Norms and rules frameworks in rural territories

(2) Networks of innovators inside the agrifood systems

(3) Food market policies at a regional scale

(4) Local supports for the renewal of agricultural practices

(5) Geographic indications, international comparisons

(5) Tools for Sustainable Development in rural areas

(6) Land use conflicts

(7) Agricultural proximities
