It has now been a constant since the end of 2008: the labour market in the Paris region continued to deteriorate significantly in the 2nd quarter of 2009, with the unemployment rate reaching an average of 7.8% over the quarter as a whole (up +0.5 point compared with the 1st quarter). There are fears that this sharp increase in the unemployment rate will continue over the coming months. In addition to the concerns about employment, there are the major difficulties faced by a large majority of sectors, (including tourism, property and so on).
In spite of this and although the region is still suffering from the economic crisis, some indicators were more positive; this was certainly true of business start-ups, which are still benefiting from the introduction of the French government's "auto-entrepreneur" stimulus plan for small businesses. Business failures, meanwhile, fell for the second quarter running.»
