PERN @ the XXVI IUSSP International Population Conference

*PERN @ the XXVI IUSSP International Population Conference*
The XXVI IUSSP International Population Conference will be held at the Palais des Congrès in Marrakech, Morocco, from September 27 to October 2, 2009.
PERN is organizing session 1207 on “Environment-induced Migrants”. Discussion on the potential short- and long-term impact of environmental stress and catastrophes has lead to the recognition of the emergence of new streams of environmental migrants and displaced persons. Yet, there is still no agreement on the definition of such displacements and there is a need for more local comparative studies to highlight the main specific features of these migrations. The session would offer a platform to present empirical research and case studies of population mobility from environmentally degraded areas. Papers would focus on the migratory mechanisms (context, proximate causes, process, etc.) as well as on the specific demographic characteristics (age and household composition, duration, etc.) of these migrations.
Other sessions included in Theme 12 -– Environment (chaired by Daniel Hogan) are:
1202 - Population impact on deforestation in developing countries
Organiser: Alisson BARBIERI (Brazil) Universidade Federal de Minas Gerais, Brazil
1203 - Interrelations between population and climate change

1204 - Population pressure, resource use and environmental degradation
